Brownfields Assessment Program

Overview

SRPC staff accept a large check from EPA staff for its Brownfields Program

SRPC has operated a brownfields assessment program since 2015 to facilitate the cleanup and reuse of brownfield properties in our region. The US EPA defines a brownfield as “real property, where the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.” Examples of brownfields include former gas stations, mills or industrial buildings, dry cleaners, leaking underground storage tanks, or buildings with lead or asbestos.

Funded by an EPA Assessment Grant, the SRPC brownfields program is able to provide assessment and cleanup planning services through our contracted Qualified Environmental Professional. Common types of assistance include Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, hazardous building material surveys and remedial action plans to identify necessary cleanup activities. Recent guidance from EPA has expanded the definition of “cleanup planning” activities, and SRPC is able to offer basic design and market analysis services for sites within its analysis program. Unfortunately, SRPC’s funding cannot be used to implement cleanup activities, but we are happy to work with eligible partners to identify and apply for cleanup funding where possible.

SRPC’s current grant runs through September 30, 2022. Please contact program staff for more information or to nominate a site for assessment or cleanup planning.
