New Durham

Strafford County’s northernmost town, New Durham is Route 11’s gateway to the Lakes Region and a central community of the Moose Mountains region. The town is a destination for seasonal residents who summer on Merrymeeting Lake and the surrounding lakes. New Durham, founded on historically Abenaki land, was organized with a plan to bring settlers from more populated areas of New Hampshire – including Durham, its namesake – through the mid-18th century. New Durham is one of the few towns in the state still in possession of its original charter. Following incorporation in 1762, the town became known for Elder Benjamin Randal and his formation of the Free Will Baptists. New Durham was later known for small lumber and mill industries which continued with the introduction of the railroad in the 19th century. Today, New Durham has a number of farms and orchards, panoramic views of nearby mountain ranges, and many outdoor recreation opportunities.
