Rollinsford
One of the smaller towns in the SRPC region, Rollinsford is sandwiched between the Tri-Cities and the Salmon Falls River. Rollinsford, Somersworth and neighboring communities in Maine were known as Newichawannock by the Abenaki. Both Rollinsford and Somersworth were originally part of Dover when it was incorporated in 1641. The town remained part of Somersworth when it separately organized in the 18th century. The arrival of rail and a key location on the Salmon Falls River spurred major industrialization through the 19th century. Rollinsford split from Somersworth in 1849 so that the upper Great Falls remained in Somersworth and the lower Salmon Falls fell under the new Rollinsford, named for a prominent local family. Like Somersworth, Rollinsford took on an industrial existence with a sizeable immigrant workforce that thrived into the 20th century. Rollinsford is home to The Mills at Salmon Falls, which date back to the 1800s. Now this building is filled with over 100 artists who use the space as studio space, as well as the Town Library.
